Hotpoint dishwasher spray arm not spinning?

If the spray arms aren’t turning, the usual causes are poor water circulation, blocked spray holes, or something physically restricting the arms. On a machine just over a year old, I’d start with the simple checks before assuming a pump fault.

1. Isolate the dishwasher from the mains first before removing parts or reaching inside.

2. Check both spray arms spin freely by hand. Make sure nothing in the baskets is catching them — tall plates, frying pan handles, long utensils, or an overfilled top rack can stop rotation.

3. Remove the spray arms and inspect the jet holes closely. Food debris, limescale or bits of label can block them. Rinse under the tap and clear the holes carefully with a cocktail stick or similar — not anything that will enlarge the holes.

4. Check the filters in the base are clean and fitted properly. If the main filter or fine mesh is blocked, water circulation can be reduced enough to affect spray pressure.

5. Look in the sump area under the filters for broken glass, bones, seeds or other debris that may be restricting water flow to the circulation pump.

6. Run a hot wash empty and listen. If it fills normally but the wash sounds weak, uneven, or much quieter than usual, that points more towards a circulation issue rather than just blocked arms.

7. Also check the top basket is fully pushed in and engaging properly with the rear water feed tube. If that connection is not sealing, the top spray arm can lose pressure.

If these checks don’t improve it, it may need a circulation pump or diverter system diagnosis. Any internal electrical testing should be left to a qualified engineer.
