Washing Machine Repair Help

Front and top loaders that won't spin, drain, fill or finish a cycle — plus error codes, bearings and pumps.

Washing machines are one of the hardest-working appliances in any UK home, so faults are common. The problems we see most often are a washing machine not spinning, not draining, not filling with water, leaking, not heating the water, making a loud banging noise on spin, or a door that won't open and stays locked. Many also throw up an error code that points straight to the fault.

Whatever brand you own — Bosch, Beko, Hotpoint, Samsung, Hoover, Whirlpool, Indesit, AEG and more — our community can help you work out what is wrong and whether it is a quick DIY fix or a job for an engineer. Browse the questions below or ask your own; answers come from fellow owners, real engineers, and our WhitegoodsHelp AI Assistant, so you are rarely waiting long.

Common washing machine problems

Why is my washing machine not spinning?

An unbalanced or too-large load, a blocked drain pump, or a worn carbon brush or motor fault can all stop the drum spinning. Many machines won't spin until they have drained, so a drainage problem can show up as a spin fault too. Post your model and exactly what the machine does and we'll help you narrow it down.

Why is my washing machine not draining?

A blocked filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a faulty drain pump are the usual causes of water left in the drum. The pump filter behind the small flap at the bottom front is the first thing to check and clean. Tell us your brand and model and we can talk you through it.

Why won't my washing machine door open?

Most front-loaders keep the door locked until the drum has drained and stopped, and for a minute or two after a cycle ends. If it stays locked, there may be water still inside, a faulty door interlock, or a control board fault. Let us know the model and any error code showing.

Why is my washing machine leaking water?

Leaks usually come from the door seal, the detergent drawer, a split hose, or the pump. Where the water appears tells you a lot, so describe where you see it and when it happens. We'll help you trace the source before you call anyone out.

What do washing machine error codes mean?

Each brand uses its own codes — Bosch E-codes, Hotpoint F-codes, Samsung letter codes and so on — and each one points to a specific fault. Post the exact code and your model and we can tell you what it means and what to check first.
