A leak part way through the wash usually points to either overfilling, a door seal issue, or a leak from a hose/pump once the machine is circulating strongly. The first job is to work out exactly where the water is coming from.

1. Isolate it from the mains first, then pull it out enough to inspect safely. If it is integrated, take care not to strain the hoses, drain pipe or cable.

2. Check whether the water is coming from the door area or underneath. Dry everything first, then run a short programme and watch with a torch. If it appears at the front corners, suspect the door seal, lower door seal, or oversudsing. If it appears from underneath, suspect a hose, sump, pump or fill system leak.

3. Check the door seals. Look for splits, flattening, food debris or damage around the main rubber seal and along the lower edge of the door. Also make sure baskets are not stopping the door from closing properly and that no large item is deflecting spray directly at the door.

4. Check for oversudsing. If washing-up liquid has ever been used, or if a rinse aid issue is causing excessive foam, suds can force water out part way through the cycle.

5. Inspect filters and spray arms. Blocked filters or split/blocked spray arms can cause poor water distribution and unusual splashing. Remove and clean them thoroughly.

6. Check underneath for obvious leaks. Look at hose joints, the circulation pump area, sump, and drain hose for drips during wash and drain stages.

If you cannot pinpoint it, the base may have a small leak only under pressure, which often needs closer inspection by an engineer. Always isolate from the mains before removing panels, and use a qualified engineer for any mains-related work.
