Samsung dishwasher filling and draining constantly

I've got a Samsung dishwasher (DW60M5050FW) that's a few months old and it keeps taking water in and pumping it straight back out without washing (anti-flood maybe). Is this something I can fix myself or do I need an engineer?

It does sound very much like the anti-flood/overflow protection has been triggered, but there are a few simple things you can check before calling anyone.

1. Switch it off, unplug it from the mains, and pull it forward if you can. If there is water in the base tray underneath, the dishwasher may think it has a leak and will keep draining. On a fairly new machine this can be caused by a genuine leak, oversudsing, or a filling issue.

2. Check for obvious leaks or signs of water underneath. Look around the door seal, inlet hose, drain hose, and where the hoses connect under the sink. Also check whether the machine is leaning forward, as water can sometimes run into the base.

3. Think about detergent use. If washing-up liquid has been used by mistake, or too much detergent/rinse aid is causing excessive foam, that can trigger this behaviour. If so, it may need clearing out and drying before it resets.

4. Check the filters and sump area inside the dishwasher. Remove and clean the filters, and make sure there is no debris affecting normal draining or causing water to back up.

5. Leave it off for a while and try again once dry. If the base tray has got wet and then dries out, some machines will start working again temporarily. If it returns, there is still an underlying fault.

Because it’s only a few months old, I’d strongly consider using the manufacturer’s warranty rather than dismantling too much yourself. If internal parts need checking, isolate it from the mains first, and use a qualified engineer for any mains-related work.

SAFETY FIRST: READ BEFORE ACTING ON THIS GUIDANCE

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional. Do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts have sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you are not confident testing or working inside the appliance, stop and call a professional.
