Hi. I have a Hotpoint Ultima Wmud843p which is around 18 months old, it was working fine until one day, nothing! When I put it on my normal programme, it just makes a clicking sound which I think is coming from the PCB. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi, if it’s completely dead apart from a repeated clicking from the control area, that often points to the main control board power supply trying to start and failing, but it’s worth ruling out a few simpler things first.

1. Check the obvious supply side Make sure the socket is live by trying a kettle or lamp in it. Also check the plug fuse. A poor mains supply can sometimes cause relay or PSU clicking.

2. See whether anything lights up at all If the display, LEDs or door lock light do nothing, that strengthens suspicion of a power supply fault on the main PCB. If some lights come on, the fault could be elsewhere.

3. Try a different programme and listen carefully If the click happens as soon as you press start, note whether the door actually locks. If it doesn’t lock, the door interlock or its wiring could be involved. If it does lock but then just clicks, the board is more suspect.

4. Inspect for loose connections Isolate the appliance from the mains before removing any covers. Check the wiring plugs onto the main PCB, on/off switch and door lock for burning, looseness or signs of overheating.

5. Look for signs of PCB failure On these Hotpoint/Indesit built machines, a failed component on the control board is not uncommon. Burn marks, a damaged track, or a capacitor issue can cause repeated clicking.

If there’s no proper power-up and the clicking is definitely from the PCB, the main module is a likely culprit, though the door lock or wiring could still trigger it. If you’re not confident with live electrical diagnosis, it’s best to get a qualified appliance engineer to test it properly.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
