I've got a Whirlpool dishwasher that's just over a year old and it's completely dead, no lights and nothing happens when I press start. Any idea what's causing this?

If it’s completely dead with no lights at all, the fault is usually in the power supply to the dishwasher, the door switch/interlock, or the main control electronics. Because it’s only just over a year old, it’s also worth checking whether Whirlpool will help under warranty or goodwill.

Before inspecting anything internal, isolate the dishwasher from the mains.

1. Check the power supply first Make sure the socket is live by plugging in another appliance. If it’s hard-wired, check the fused spur hasn’t tripped and the fuse is intact. Also check your consumer unit for a tripped breaker.

2. Check the plug fuse if fitted If it has a 13A plug, inspect and replace the fuse with the correct rating if needed. A blown fuse can point to a fault, but sometimes it’s just the first thing to rule out.

3. Try a basic reset Leave it disconnected from the mains for 10–15 minutes, then power it back up. Occasionally the control can lock up after a power issue.

4. Check the door is closing properly If the latch or door interlock has failed, some machines can appear lifeless or refuse to respond. Make sure nothing is stopping the door from fully engaging.

5. If still totally dead The likely suspects are the mains filter, wiring connection, on/off switch/control panel, or main PCB. On newer Whirlpool dishwashers, a failed control module is possible, but it needs proper testing before condemning it.

If the supply is definitely present and it still shows no signs of life, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer, especially for any mains electrical testing. If it turns out to be a sealed component or wiring issue, don’t work on it live.

SAFETY FIRST: READ BEFORE ACTING ON THIS GUIDANCE

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional. Do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts have sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you are not confident testing or working inside the appliance, stop and call a professional.
