My machine won't run. It starts off OK, adds a little bit of water and after about 10 seconds it stops and flashes 4 lights, lock, delay timer, easy iron and 1200-600.

I've checked the load, the water, turned the power off for 40 seconds as per troubleshooting instructions.

The only thing that's happened since it was working perfectly happily is that I switched it off at the mains while I was away.

It is, very inconveniently, Easter, and Indesit don't answer phones until Tuesday.

Has anyone got an idea as to how I can stop this idiocy and get some washing done?

Thanks.

It does sound as if the machine is aborting very early in the cycle, and on these Indesit/Hotpoint-built machines the light combinations can point to a fault, but I wouldn’t want to guess the exact code from the panel lights alone without seeing the full sequence. The best approach is to narrow down whether it’s failing on filling, draining, or sensing water level.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the appliance from the mains.

1. Check for a drain fault first If it takes a little water in, then stops after 10 seconds, one common cause is that it thinks it cannot drain properly. Check the pump filter if your model has an accessible one, and look for coins, buttons, lint or a blockage. Also check the drain hose isn’t kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe.

2. Check the pressure system If the pressure chamber or pressure switch hose is partially blocked, the machine can “think” it already has too much water or get confused during fill. If you’re comfortable removing the lid, inspect the thin pressure hose going to the pressure switch for splits, blockage or coming loose. Don’t blow hard into electrical parts.

3. Check the water supply/fill Make sure the inlet valve is fully on and the inlet hose/filter isn’t restricted. A poor fill can cause an early stop.

4. Try a drain/spin or rinse programme If drain/spin works, that helps point away from the motor and more towards filling/level sensing. If it won’t do that either, the fault is broader.

5. Leave it powered off longer Try switching off at the mains for 10–15 minutes rather than 40 seconds, then retry.

If it still stops with the same lights, the most likely areas are pump/drainage, pressure switch system, or the control board. If you’re not confident stripping it down, it would be best to get a qualified appliance engineer in. Any mains electrical testing should be left to a professional.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
