Zanussi ZWX 1605 W won't start - 'End' LED flashing

Hi, this is my first post on this site and I hope that someone will be able to help me solve a problem on a Zanussi washing machine. I have read loads of messages from others on this site and cannot find anything that is similar. My father-in-law, who owns the washing machine and has said it has been working very well up to the other day, said he loaded the machine, pressed the on/off button, the 'End' LED immediately started flashing green continuously and nothing happened when he pressed the start button. I have managed, by pressing different buttons (?), to get the LEDs (green) on the control panel to light up individually and to cycle round lighting up one after the other, and note that the 'Filter' LED lights up red, rather than green. So I have checked the drain pump chamber and the and the inlet supply water filter for blockages to no avail. Can anyone please offer any advice as to what could be the reason for this and what I can do to get the machine working correctly again. Thanks ABL

Hi ABL. On these older Zanussi/Electrolux machines, a flashing “End” light with odd panel behaviour can mean either a stored fault, a drainage issue, or the machine has been put into a test/diagnostic mode by button presses. The red “Filter” light often points towards a pump/drain problem, but I wouldn’t assume that alone.

Before inspecting anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Try a full reset first Unplug it for 10–15 minutes, then plug back in and try a simple drain/spin or rinse programme. If the panel had been put into a test mode, this may clear it.

2. Check it is not stuck in water If there is any water left in the drum, the machine may refuse to start. Check: - pump filter is fully clear - drain hose is not kinked or blocked - sink spigot/standpipe is not blocked - pump impeller turns freely and isn’t jammed by debris

3. Listen when Start is pressed Does it try to lock the door, fill, or run the pump? - No door lock click: possible door interlock fault - Pump runs continuously: possible drain/pressure system issue - Completely dead apart from lights: possible control or selector issue

4. Check the pressure system A blocked pressure chamber or pressure switch hose can make the machine think it is full of water. Check the thin hose to the pressure switch for splits/blockage if you’re competent.

5. Control panel / selector fault Because you’ve had LEDs cycling individually, the machine may have entered a service mode, or there may be a fault with the programme selector/control board. If reset does not cure it, this becomes more likely.

If you can report exactly which lights flash in normal use, and whether the door locks or pump runs, that will narrow it down a lot. For any live electrical testing or control board work, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
