Hotpoint making loud noises during wash and spin cycles and stopped spinning
I purchased a Hotpoint HV7L1451p front loader in 2017 as a replacement on my insurance for a previous Hotpoint. It has been making loud noises during wash and spin cycles and stopped spinning. Upon inspection. The belt detached (now attached) and there was a lot of brown deposits of rust on the drum, back detachable panel and the floor under the machine. If this is the bearings. Is it worth repairing? I dont know if its a sealed drum or not. I move the drum by hand and it makes a knocking noise and does not feel steady in motion. There was white spiral chippings after the last wash. Possibly due to friction from the drum?
Advice please. I appreciate it.

AI-generated from this discussion
This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.
Hotpoint HV7L1451p loud wash/spin noise, belt off and no spin
- The problem
- A Hotpoint HV7L1451p front-loading washing machine became very noisy during wash and spin, then stopped spinning. The belt had come off, there were brown rusty deposits on the drum area, rear panel and floor, the drum knocked and felt unsteady when turned by hand, and white spiral chippings were found after the last wash.
- Likely cause
- The accepted reply identified classic drum bearing failure, with water likely having leaked through the drum bearing seal into the bearings. This was presented as the explanation for the rust deposits and mechanical instability.
- What fixed it
- The discussion diagnosed drum bearing failure but did not document a repair. The original poster chose to replace the machine rather than pursue repair, so the exact repair route was not confirmed.
- Checks to try
- Belt found detached and reattached
- Brown rust deposits seen on the drum area, rear detachable panel and floor under the machine
- Drum turned by hand and found to knock and feel unsteady
- White spiral chippings found after the last wash
Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hello Barry, it seems the majority of new washing machines have sealed outer drums now. The symptoms you describe are classic drum bearing failure. The brown rust marks at the back are caused by water leaking into the bearings through the drum bearing seal. In my experience Hotpoint have always had rubbish drum bearing seals. Drum bearing failure has always been a very common issue. I would never buy a Whirlpool, Hotpoint or Indesit appliance. To be honest, there are very few of the common brands I would buy.
