Bosch Avantixx 7 banging noise

Hi, can anyone help with a banging noise that I have on a Bosch Avantixx 7, WAE24367GB/34.

This is not happening all the time but is most noticable during a wash/rinse when the drum is rotating and slightly unbalanced. The noise sounds like something hitting the drum and is very similar to the noise you would get if the machine was empty apart from a plastic washing liquid ball bouncing around in the rotating drum. It seems like it is banging once on each drum revolution.

Turning the drum by hand it feels quite smooth with no unusual sounds. There is virtually no play when lifting the drum or moving side to side.

I've had the top and back cover off but cannot see anything obvious. I'm convinced it's something connected with the drum as doesn't sound at all like it's anything knocking on the tub or hitting outer casing. Looking inside drum with a lamp shining through holes and turning it around, I cannot see any loose objects between the drum and tub though cannot rule that out.

Having looked through the help page for noises, I wonder if it is possible that the spider could be cracked or loose, can't see anything else there that might apply.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Chris

Hi Chris,

From your description, a cracked spider is possible, but it’s not the first thing I’d suspect if the drum feels smooth by hand and has very little play. A once-per-revolution “knock” is often caused by either a foreign object between drum and tub, or something on the drum itself only contacting under load.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check for a foreign object in the outer tub Coins, bra wires, collar stiffeners, screws and similar can sit where they only catch the drum when it flexes slightly with laundry in it. Shine a torch through the drum holes and also check around the heater area if accessible. On many Bosch machines, removing the heater can help inspect the bottom of the tub, but only do that if you’re confident.

2. Inspect the drum paddles/lifters Make sure none are loose or cracked. A slightly loose paddle can sound like an object inside the drum once per turn.

3. Look for witness marks Check inside the drum, drum holes, door seal, and outer tub for shiny rub marks, scoring, or small dents. These often show exactly where contact is happening.

4. Check pulley and drum fixing With the back off, inspect the drum pulley for looseness, cracking, or movement on the shaft. A fault here can knock under reversing or uneven load.

5. Consider the spider, but don’t assume it yet A cracked spider often gives imbalance, rumbling, drum misalignment, or visible wobble. If none of that is present, it’s less certain, though still possible in early stages.

If you can’t find a trapped object or obvious loose part, it may need a strip-down to confirm. For any mains-related work, or if major drum/tub dismantling is needed, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
