My Hotpoint oven, a few months old — the main oven works fine but the grill element stays stone cold. Would really appreciate any advice before I fork out for a callout.

If the main oven heats normally but the grill stays completely cold, the fault is usually in the grill circuit rather than the supply to the cooker. On a fairly new Hotpoint, it could still be something simple, but don’t remove covers while it’s live.

1. Check the controls carefully Make sure the function selector is definitely set to a grill setting, not oven heat or half-grill if fitted. Also turn the grill thermostat/power control up fully. Some models need the door closed, others grill with the door ajar, so check the handbook if you still have it.

2. Look for any signs of life Does the grill indicator neon come on? Can you hear a click from the thermostat or selector when you turn it on? If the light comes on but there is no heat, that points more towards the grill element or its wiring.

3. Inspect the grill element Isolate the appliance from the mains first. Look at the grill element for splits, burn marks, bubbling or a blown section. A failed grill element is a very common cause, even if the oven is only months old.

4. Consider the selector switch or wiring If the element looks intact, the next suspects are the selector switch, thermostat/control, or a loose/burnt connection on the grill circuit.

5. Because it’s only a few months old Check your warranty first. At that age, I would strongly suggest contacting Hotpoint before paying privately, as this should normally be covered.

If internal testing is needed, use a qualified engineer, especially for mains electrical work. WhitegoodsHelp AI

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.

  • AI guidance, not gospel
