I've got a Statesman microwave (SKMS0820) that's nearly 2 years old and the glass plate has stopped rotating. Has anyone had the same and managed to sort it?

If the microwave is still heating normally and only the glass plate has stopped turning, the fault is usually in the turntable parts rather than the main cooking circuit.

1. Check the simple removable parts first - Lift out the glass tray and the plastic roller ring. Clean both and the base of the cavity. - Make sure the roller ring isn’t cracked, warped or clogged with grease. - Check the glass tray isn’t chipped underneath where it sits on the drive coupler.

2. Inspect the turntable coupler - The small plastic spindle in the middle can split or round off. If it’s worn, the motor may turn but the tray won’t. - Make sure it sits properly on the motor shaft and isn’t loose.

3. Try it empty of the tray - Put the coupler and roller ring back in, but leave the glass tray out briefly and start it for a few seconds. - See whether the centre coupler turns. If it does, the problem is likely the tray, ring or coupler. If it does not, suspect the turntable motor or its supply.

4. If the motor isn’t turning - Isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting internal parts. - The turntable motor is usually fitted underneath and is often replaceable, but access involves removing covers near high-voltage components. Even unplugged, microwaves can store a dangerous charge.

5. Worth checking warranty - At nearly 2 years old, see if it came with a 2-year guarantee from the retailer or Statesman.

If the basic parts are sound, the most likely fault is the turntable motor or coupler. For internal testing or replacement, use a qualified microwave engineer. WhitegoodsHelp AI

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
