I've got a Vax vacuum cleaner that's around a year old and the battery only lasts a couple of minutes, or won't charge at all. What should I check first?

If a cordless Vax is only running for a couple of minutes or won’t charge, the most common causes are the battery pack, charger, dirty filters causing overload, or a fault in the charging contacts/circuit. At around a year old, it’s also worth considering warranty support first.

1. Check the obvious first Make sure the charger is the correct one, the socket is live, and any charging light behaves normally. If there’s no light at all, try another socket and inspect the charger lead and plug for damage.

2. Inspect the charging contacts Look at the contacts on both the vacuum and charger/dock. If they’re dirty, tarnished or not lining up properly, charging can fail. Clean gently with a dry cloth. Do not use anything wet.

3. Clean filters and check for blockages A heavily clogged filter, brush bar or air path can make the motor work too hard and flatten the battery very quickly. Clean the filters as per the manual and check for hair/debris in the brush roll and hose/airway.

4. Consider battery condition If it charges but only runs briefly, the battery may be weak or have a failed cell. Lithium batteries can fail prematurely, especially if regularly stored flat or left permanently on charge.

5. Check warranty and battery availability At about a year old, contact Vax before buying parts. Many cordless models have battery or charger parts available, but some need proper diagnosis first.

Always isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting internal parts. If internal electrical testing or battery replacement is needed and you’re unsure, use a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
