If the machine is stopping with a “clean fluff” warning and the drum won’t turn, that doesn’t always mean the filter itself is the only problem. On washer dryers and condenser/heat pump dryers, restricted airflow or a drum drive fault can both bring up similar symptoms.

1. Isolate it from the mains first before inspecting anything internal.

2. Clean all fluff filters thoroughly. Remove and wash/dry the main lint filter(s). If it’s a condenser or heat pump model, also check the lower filter, condenser area, and any fluff build-up in the air channels.

3. Check for water/condensation issues. If it has a water container, empty it fully. If it’s a washer dryer, check whether the machine is failing to drain properly, as some models won’t run the drying cycle correctly if water is left inside.

4. Try turning the drum by hand. With the appliance switched off, open the door and rotate the drum manually. If it feels stiff, jammed, or scraping, there may be a seized roller, worn bearing, or something trapped.

5. Listen to what it does when started. If you hear the motor hum but the drum doesn’t move, a broken or slipped drive belt is very likely. If it does absolutely nothing, it could be motor, capacitor (where fitted), control, or door lock related.

6. Check the door closes properly. A faulty door catch/lock can stop drum movement on some models.

If the filters and airflow path are clear but the drum still won’t turn, it’s likely a belt/motor issue rather than just fluff. For any internal electrical testing, mains-related repairs, or sealed refrigeration work on a heat pump dryer, use a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
