Our WT 2670 is out of warranty and there is a burning smell when you run a drying cycle, the clothes are hot but wet. When this happened before it was a blocked duct over the top of the machine. It has been replaced twice by Miele in the past under their warranty. Is this a job I could under take and can you get the parts required? Looking for a cheapish solution as the machine is 12 years old and the bearings are getting noisy. If not what make of replacement machine should we be looking at? Samsung are offering a 5 year free guarantee, are they any good?

A burning smell on a washer dryer, with clothes coming out hot but still wet, does point very strongly to poor airflow again rather than a simple heater fault. On these Miele washer dryers the drying air path can lint up badly, and if the ducting has already been replaced twice it suggests either a recurring blockage or heat damage in that area.

Before doing anything, isolate the appliance from the mains. Do not keep running it with a burning smell.

1. Check the symptoms carefully If the drum heats up but moisture is not being removed, the fan/air duct/condenser path is the main suspect. If there is little or no airflow, the heater can overheat and cause the smell.

2. Inspect the accessible airways If you are competent removing covers, check for fluff build-up, scorched ducting, damaged seals, and any restriction in the drying circuit over the top of the machine. Also check whether the fan is actually turning properly and not loose or obstructed.

3. Look for heat damage Any browned plastic, brittle ducts, or overheated connectors means parts should be replaced, not patched up. A repeated failure can also be caused by thermostats or airflow problems rather than the duct alone.

4. Is it worth repairing? At 12 years old, with noisy bearings as well, I’d be cautious about spending much. Parts may still be available through Miele spares suppliers, but a proper strip-down on a washer dryer is not usually a cheap DIY job.

5. Replacement advice If you replace it, I’d strongly suggest separate washing machine and tumble dryer if you have room. They are usually more reliable and cheaper to repair than washer dryers. Samsung can be decent, but warranties often have exclusions, so read the small print carefully. Miele, Bosch and Siemens are generally safer bets if budget allows.

If you want, I can suggest what to check first if you remove the lid, but for any mains work or deeper dismantling I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
