Hoping someone can help with my Haier washer dryer (HWD90-B14979) — the dry cycle runs for hours but everything still comes out damp. Any idea what's causing this?

If the wash side is working normally and the dryer just runs on leaving items damp, the fault is usually either poor airflow, poor draining/spinning, or a problem with the heating/condensing side. On a washer dryer there are a few simple checks you can do first.

1. Check the load size and programme Don’t judge it on a full wash load. Drying capacity is always much lower than washing capacity. Try a small load of a few towels or similar on a proper timed or cotton dry programme. If it dries a small load better, overloading is likely the main issue.

2. Make sure it is spinning properly first If clothes are coming out too wet after the wash/spin, the dryer will struggle and run for ages. Check the final spin speed used and whether the load is evenly distributed. A draining problem can also leave clothes damp, so make sure the pump filter and drain hose aren’t partially blocked.

3. Check airflow and condensation performance Washer dryers rely on removing moist air and condensing it. If the condenser path, ducting, or internal lint build-up is restricted, drying times become very long and clothes stay damp. Some Haier models can suffer from fluff build-up internally even if there’s no user-cleanable lint filter.

4. See whether it is actually heating If there is little or no heat during drying, likely causes include the heater, thermostats/thermal cut-out, wiring, or control issue. If there is heat but poor drying, suspect airflow or condensing problems instead.

5. Watch for water supply issues during drying Many washer dryers use cold water during the dry cycle for condensation. If the water supply to the machine is restricted or the inlet valve isn’t operating correctly, drying performance can be poor.

Please isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If the simple checks don’t help, this is one for a qualified appliance engineer, especially for live electrical testing or strip-down of the dryer/condenser system.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
