Bought a Breville coffee machine a year ago and the touch buttons don't respond, or need pressing several times. Is this a common fault on these?

Yes, that can happen on some Breville coffee machines, but it is not a single “known fault” with one definite cause. On touch-button models the problem is usually either the control panel itself, moisture/contamination, or an issue on the main control board.

A few checks to narrow it down:

1. Clean and dry the control area Steam, coffee splashes, grease and limescale residue can interfere with touch controls. Unplug the machine from the mains, let it cool, then clean the fascia with a barely damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Don’t let water run into the panel edges.

2. Try a full reset Leave it unplugged for 10–15 minutes, then power it back up and test again. Sometimes the electronics simply lock up.

3. Check for moisture ingress If the machine has been used heavily for steaming, condensation can get behind the touch panel. If the buttons improve after the machine has been left unused and fully dried, that points in that direction.

4. Look for patterns If only one or two buttons are affected, the touch panel or ribbon connection is more suspect. If all buttons are erratic, the main PCB or low-voltage power supply is more likely.

5. Consider warranty/repair At only about a year old, it is worth checking your proof of purchase and speaking to Breville first. A failed touch panel or control board is not usually a DIY repair unless you are experienced.

Safety reminder: always isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. For internal electrical diagnosis or repair, use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
