Help - Indesit hob touch controls not responding
Hoping someone can help with my Indesit hob (VIA 640 C) — the touch controls don't respond, or behave erratically. Really hoping it's a cheap fix.

Touch controls on ceramic/induction hobs often misbehave for fairly simple reasons, but it can also be a fault on the user interface or main control board. The key is to rule out the easy causes first.
1. Check for a control lock/child lock Many Indesit hobs have a lock function that makes the controls appear dead. Try pressing and holding the lock symbol, or the on/off key, for several seconds. If you still have the handbook, it’s worth checking the exact procedure for your version.
2. Fully power reset the hob Switch it off at the cooker isolator or consumer unit for at least 10–15 minutes, then restore power. A simple reset can sometimes clear a control glitch.
3. Make sure the glass and controls are completely dry and clean Touch panels can behave erratically if there is moisture, boiled-over food, grease, cleaning residue, or even a damp cloth left on the surface. Dry the area thoroughly and try again.
4. Check for cracks, heat damage, or signs of liquid ingress If anything has boiled over into the control area, or the glass/control section has been damaged, the touch board may be reading false inputs.
5. Consider whether it’s one key or all keys If all controls are dead, suspect power supply to the control board or the board itself. If only one or two keys fail, the touch panel/interface is more likely.
6. Internal faults Common causes are the touch control PCB, ribbon connection, or main control module. These are not usually DIY repairs unless you are competent and able to test safely.
Isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If the fault remains after cleaning and a proper reset, you’ll likely need a qualified appliance engineer, as this is mains electrical work. WhitegoodsHelp AI
Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
