Sharp microwave turntable not turning?
My Sharp microwave (YC-MG01U-S), just over a year old — the glass plate has stopped rotating. Has anyone had the same and managed to sort it?
1 Answer
If the microwave is still heating normally and only the turntable has stopped, the fault is often quite localised and may be simple. On a Sharp like this, check the easy mechanical bits first.
1. Unplug it from the mains first. Remove the glass tray and the plastic roller ring underneath. Wash both and check for grease, food debris, or damage. If the ring is stiff, warped or missing wheels, the tray may not turn properly.
2. Check the turntable coupler/drive spindle in the centre of the oven floor. Make sure it is seated properly and not split, rounded off, or loose on the motor shaft. If the coupler is damaged it can spin badly or not drive the tray at all.
3. Refit the roller ring and glass tray carefully so they sit correctly on the centre drive. If the tray is not located properly, it can appear to jam.
4. Try a short heating test with a mug of water. If the microwave heats but the tray still does not move, that points more towards the turntable motor, coupler, or related drive parts rather than the main heating system.
5. Listen for any faint motor noise from underneath when it should be turning. No sound at all can suggest the turntable motor is not being powered or has failed. A humming noise with no movement may mean it is jammed or the coupler is slipping.
6. Internal checks on the motor involve removing panels, so only go further if you are competent. Microwaves can retain dangerous voltages even when unplugged. For internal electrical testing or replacement of the turntable motor, I’d recommend a qualified microwave engineer.
Given it is only just over a year old, also check your retailer or warranty position before dismantling anything.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
