I've got a Beko vacuum cleaner (PowerClean VRT94929VI) that's around a year old and it's completely dead and won't power up at all. Would really appreciate any advice before I fork out for a callout.

If it’s completely dead on a cordless Beko like this, the fault is usually in the power supply path rather than the motor itself. Before opening anything, it’s worth ruling out the simple causes first.

1. Check the charger and charging point Make sure the charger is definitely live by trying the socket with another appliance. Then inspect the charger lead, plug-top, and the vacuum’s charging socket for damage, looseness, or dirt. If there’s no charging light at all when connected, that points toward charger, battery, or charging circuit trouble.

2. Leave it on charge for a good while If the battery has gone very flat, try leaving it on charge for several hours, ideally using the original charger. Watch for any signs of life such as LEDs, display activity, or brief flashing.

3. Check for a stuck reset/protection condition Some cordless vacuums shut down if they’ve overheated or blocked. Empty the dust container, clean the filters, and check the brush head, wand, and airways for blockages. Then leave it switched off for 30 minutes and try again.

4. Inspect the battery fit and contacts If the battery is removable, make sure it is seated properly. Check the contacts for contamination or burning. A poor battery connection can make the machine appear completely dead.

5. Consider the likely faults If there are still no lights and no response, the most likely causes are a failed charger, failed battery pack, faulty on/off switch, or a problem on the main PCB. On a one-year-old machine, battery or charger issues are common.

Safety reminder: isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting internal parts. If testing involves mains electrics or internal component checks, it’s best left to a qualified engineer.

Given the age, also check whether it’s still under Beko warranty before paying for a repair.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
