Washer Empties Out Water When Trying To Fill
Help,
I have a hoover washer. When filling, the water empties out of the drain pipe so it doesn't stay filled with water. When the washer is trying to fill, water is going out the drain pipe at the same time. Also the dial when set to 4 stays at 4.
The washer does spin when set to six (6=spin cycle), Could this be a control unit problem?
Any suggestions?

Your problem is probably caused because the end of the drain hose is lower than the level of the water in the tub. This causes siphoning. If the drain hose is very low, then water siphons out as soon as it enters the washing machine. If it's just slightly lower than it should be, then siphoning is usually triggered when the washing machine first pumps water out or sometimes only occasionally (seemingly at random).
This fault usually occurs when the washing machine has been moved out for cleaning or relocated in a new house.
The drain hose should not be pushed down too far into the waste water pipe. It needs to go just far enough in to prevent it falling out. You should ensure that the plastic crook (that forces the end of the drain hose into a shepherd’s hook) is fitted to the end of the drain hose The length of drain hose sticking out of the crook should be about 4 or 5 inches.
The height of the waste water pipe on the plumbing should be about 18 inches to 2 foot. Specific instructions can usually be found in the instruction book ( Related link: Washing machine instruction books and user manuals ). Basically, the end of the drain hose should not be lower than the water in the tub. Have a look at the crude drawing I just did which may make things clearer.

[EDIT]
Modern washing machines can also develop a fault similar to this where it fills and empties at the same time. This could be caused if the machine thinks the washer is overheating (possibly caused by a faulty NTC) so it drains the water but tops it up with cold to try and cool it all down. Check the explanation above though before assuming it's anything more serious.
