Aeg 52600 Spin Problem

Hi!

I recently bought a second hand Aeg 56200 washing machine which seems to wash and spin OK with clothes in, but struggles to spin anything heavy like towels.

On a cotton cycle when the machine is distributing before the spin starts, the drum doesn't seem to rotate fast enough so that the towels stick to the sides of the drum. Instead, the towels just seem to roll around the drum and end up in a ball. The machine usually spends ages doing this, then just abandons spinning altogether. Occasionally the machine will just start spinning regardless, with the drum assembly hitting the cabinet. This happens even if there are only two towels in it.

Whilst this happens during a full wash cycle, if you set the machine on a separate spin cycle with towels in - it distributes correctly and then spins without any problems. The pump works perfectly and you can hear that all of the water has drained out before it attempts to distribute.

Does this sound like a pcb problem? - or do you reckon it could be motor related?

I've just moved into my first house so I'm trying to avoid the expense of having to buy a new machine!

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

From what you describe, it’s less likely to be a simple pump fault and not obviously a motor fault either, especially as it will do a separate spin with towels. That points more towards an out-of-balance sensing/control issue, suspension problem, or a fault that only shows up during the wash-to-spin transition.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check the shock absorbers and suspension If the drum can bounce excessively or knock the cabinet, worn dampers are a very common cause. Push the drum down firmly by hand and release it. If it springs up and keeps bouncing, the dampers may be weak.

2. Check for play in the drum and bearings Lift the inner drum upwards through the door opening. Any noticeable clunk or movement could mean worn bearings or spider/drum support issues, which can upset balancing.

3. Inspect the motor carbon brushes If fitted, worn brushes can cause poor low-speed control or weak torque during distribution. The machine may still seem to run but struggle at certain stages. Also check the motor connector and wiring.

4. Check the tacho/motor speed sensing A loose tacho magnet/coil or wiring fault can cause erratic drum control, especially during balance detection before spin.

5. Consider the pressure system If it thinks there is still water present, it may limit spin behaviour on a wash programme. Check the pressure chamber and pressure hose for soap sludge blockage.

Because it spins properly on a spin-only cycle, I would check suspension, brushes/tacho, and pressure system before suspecting the PCB. If internal electrical tests are needed, it’s best left to a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
