Hotpoint Ariston Programme Wheel Fail

Hi

I have a 4 year old Hotpoint Ariston ARFX 145.

Now I can't seem to change the program with the programme wheel. The machine works as good as new except for the wheel. Just one (default) programme works. I can change speed and temperature with the buttons.

Is there something I han try to get it fixed or is it doomed? (Calling a repair man is too expensive, costs more than the machine is worth)

Thanks in advance

Hi,

If the washer still runs normally on one default programme, but the programme knob no longer selects anything else, the most likely issue is either the selector knob/switch itself or the control board not seeing the selector position. It may still be repairable, but it depends which part has failed.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check the knob itself Remove the programme knob if it simply pulls off. Make sure it isn’t cracked or slipping on the shaft. Sometimes the plastic inside the knob splits, so the knob turns but the selector underneath does not.

2. See if the selector spindle turns properly With the knob removed, try gently turning the selector shaft/spindle underneath. If it feels loose, damaged, or does not click/index properly, the selector switch may have failed mechanically.

3. Try a reset Turn the machine off, unplug it for 10–15 minutes, then power it back up and test again. Occasionally the electronics can lock up, though this is less likely if the fault is consistent.

4. Check for signs of moisture or detergent ingress If you are confident removing the fascia/top, inspect for corrosion, damp, or residue around the programme selector and control module area. On some Hotpoint/Ariston machines, selector faults can be caused by the switch contacts or PCB connections.

5. Consider the likely repair If the knob is damaged, that’s usually cheap. If the selector switch is separate, it may be replaceable. If the selector is part of the main PCB, repair may not be economical.

So no, it’s not necessarily doomed, but the first thing to rule out is a slipping/broken knob. If the fault is on the control board, it becomes less worthwhile. For any mains-related testing or board repair, use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
