Hi. My washing machine wasnt draining properly so after investigation it had 50p stuck in the hose which I have now removed. When I put it all back together and tried to start a new wash it just spins slowly and the wash programme doesn't start. No water comes into the machine, it just spins slowly each way. I've put it on rinse and water comes in and that seems ok. Ive tried to jusy spin but again it just goes slowly each way. It's like it's stuck on one programme.

I've tried everything I can think of. . Please help!

It does sound as if the machine is getting “confused” about where it is in the cycle, or it still thinks there is a drain/emptying problem. The fact that it will take water on rinse is useful, because it suggests the water supply itself is not the main issue.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check it is fully emptying Run a drain or spin/drain programme and listen carefully. If the pump hums but little water comes out, there may still be a partial blockage in the pump, sump hose, or drain hose. A machine that cannot confirm it has emptied properly may just tumble slowly and refuse to move on.

2. Recheck the pump filter, pump impeller and hoses Since a 50p was found, there may be more debris left behind. Make sure the pump impeller turns freely and isn’t damaged or jammed. Also check the drain hose isn’t kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe.

3. Check the pressure system If the pressure chamber or pressure switch tube is blocked with gunge, the machine can wrongly think it is full or empty and behave oddly. This is a common follow-on fault after drainage issues. Check the small pressure tube for blockage or splits.

4. Try a reset Turn the selector to off, leave it unplugged for 10–15 minutes, then try a simple short wash. If it still only tumbles slowly each way, the timer/control, pressure switch, or pump feedback may be at fault.

5. Consider the door lock If the door interlock is not proving correctly, some models will tumble but not properly start the cycle.

If the fault remains after these checks, it will likely need proper testing with a meter. For any mains-related internal testing, use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
