Ariston Aml125 - Lock Icon Flashing (And "9H", Too, If Time Set)

Hello,

I looked through the help section about this and didn't find anything that jumped out at me.

I have an Ariston AML125 that has the lock icon flashing. If the dryer temperature is set other than zero, it (the light beside the "9h" - the bottom one of the four) flashes in time with the lock light.

When it first happened, at the end of a load, I couldn't get the door open and ended up breaking the handle. I got the door open fiddling with the latch from the broken handle opening. I unplugged the machine for a good 10 minutes (to see if it would reset). The flashing continued when I turned it back on. I replaced the handle.

Thinking that it was the locking switch, I replaced that, too. No good. The lights still flash as described above.

Does anyone have the list of error codes for flashing lights to tell me if this is something simple that I can replace or if I need professional expertise? Any other suggestions?

Many thanks, Ed

Hi Ed,

On these Ariston/Hotpoint washer dryers, a flashing lock light together with one of the option/delay lights often indicates a stored fault, but I wouldn’t want to guess the exact code from the lamp pattern alone. The useful thing now is to narrow down whether it’s still a door-lock circuit issue, a drainage issue, or a control board/wiring fault.

1. Isolate it from the mains first before removing any panels or inspecting internal parts.

2. Check the door and latch alignment carefully. Since the handle broke and has been replaced, make sure the door hook is entering the interlock cleanly and isn’t sitting slightly out of position. Even a small misalignment can stop the lock proving properly.

3. Inspect the new door interlock wiring. Remove the retaining band/seal front if needed and check the plug on the interlock for loose, burnt or broken wires. The fault is often in the connector or harness rather than the lock itself.

4. Check whether there is still water left in the machine. If it has failed to drain, the door can remain locked and some models will flash the lock lamp. Clean the pump filter and check the drain pump is free and not jammed.

5. Try a drain/spin or rinse cycle. If it won’t start properly, listen for whether the door locks, whether the pump runs, and whether the drum moves at all. That helps pinpoint which circuit is failing.

6. If the lock and wiring look sound, the next suspect is the main PCB/control module, especially if the lights are flashing consistently with no mechanical issue found.

If you can report exactly which lights flash and whether it drains/spins, that would help narrow it down further. For mains electrical testing or control board work, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
