If the door lock is repeatedly clicking even after replacing the interlock, the fault is often not the lock itself but the supply or control to it. On these Hotpoint machines, the board usually tries to lock the door several times before giving up.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check the door is actually closing properly Make sure the door catch/strike is not loose, cracked or misaligned. If the door isn’t pulling fully into the lock, a new interlock will still just click repeatedly.

2. Inspect the wiring to the door lock Remove the top or front access as needed and check the plug on the interlock, wiring loom, and terminals. Look for loose connections, overheating, burning, broken wires near the hinge area, or corrosion. A poor connection can cause repeated lock attempts.

3. Check for movement in the cabinet or lock mount If the interlock isn’t mounted securely, or the front panel is distorted, the latch may not engage consistently. Make sure the lock sits firmly in place.

4. Consider the main control board If the lock and door catch are sound, the control PCB may not be sending or holding the correct supply to the interlock. This is a common next suspect when you get repeated clicking with a known good lock fitted.

5. Double-check the replacement part Make sure the interlock fitted is the exact correct one for the WML520. Pattern parts can sometimes cause odd behaviour.

If the wiring and door alignment look fine, it’s likely moving towards a control board or harness fault. For any live electrical testing, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
