Hi there!

I have a hotpoint Aquarius wdl540 (wash/dry), and this has not been happening in every wash, but happened enough times to get me worried.

Does anyone know the reason why the cycle sometimes starts normally but keeps going forever and won't switch to spin automatically? I noticed this few times and the only thing to do was to pause it and manually change it to spin.

Spin works fine, it's that automatic finish to the wash and move onto spinning..

Than you for any help and guidance you can give me!!!

Hi Jools,

If it washes normally but sometimes never advances into spin on its own, the usual causes are either it thinks there is still water in the machine, or it is struggling to balance the load before spin. Because spin works when you select it manually, that helps narrow it down.

1. Check if there is water left in the drum when it gets stuck If there is, the machine may not be draining fully or quickly enough. Check the pump filter, the drain hose for kinks/blockages, and the sink standpipe or spigot connection.

2. Listen to the drain pump When it should be moving to spin, you should hear the pump running. If it sounds weak, noisy, or intermittent, the pump could be partially blocked or wearing out.

3. Consider load balance These Hotpoint washer dryers can keep trying to redistribute an unbalanced load and appear to “go on forever”. This is more common with single heavy items, towels, or mixed loads. Try a normal-sized balanced load and see if the fault repeats.

4. Check pressure system issues If the pressure chamber or pressure switch hose is partially blocked, the machine can wrongly think there is still water inside and refuse to progress properly.

5. If it is completely random An intermittent timer/control board fault is possible, but I would rule out drainage and pressure sensing first as they are more common.

Always isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If you are not confident, or it needs electrical diagnosis, use a qualified appliance engineer.

Hope that points you in the right direction.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
