If the plug fuse is blowing after each wash, there is a real electrical fault somewhere rather than a simple control issue. The key is to work out whether the fault happens during heating, spinning, draining, or right at the end of the cycle.

1. Isolate it first Unplug the machine from the mains before removing any panels or inspecting internal parts. A repeatedly blowing plug fuse means you should treat it seriously.

2. Check the basics at the plug Make sure the correct 13A fuse is fitted, not a lower one. Also inspect the plug, socket, and mains lead for signs of overheating, burning, or damage.

3. Note when the fuse blows If it completes one full wash then blows as you start the next one, a component may be breaking down once it gets hot or damp. Common suspects are: - Heating element leaking to earth - Mains filter/interference suppressor - Door interlock - Drain pump or motor wiring

4. Most likely first check: heater On Hotpoint washers, a heater with insulation breakdown is a common cause of fuse blowing, especially once warmed up. If the fault tends to happen during or after a hot wash, that makes the element more suspect.

5. Check for leaks or damp Look underneath and around the motor, pump, heater area, and wiring. Even a slight leak can drip onto electrics and blow the fuse.

6. Don’t keep replacing fuses That can mask the fault and risks further damage. If you have a meter and know how to use it, insulation testing would be the proper way to confirm the faulty part.

If you’re not equipped for electrical diagnosis, I’d strongly recommend a qualified appliance engineer, as this is mains-related fault finding rather than guesswork.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
