Hoover Wmh 168D Help Needed

Hi, I have a Hoover WMH 168d Washing machine, The drum stopped turning last week so inspected the motor and found one of the carbon brush needed replacing, it started working again but now it doesn't stop spinning when placed on spin cycle the timer display counts down from 7 minutes and sticks on 1 minute continually also speed increases when it hits the 1 minute mark and motor brushed spark, ive found a work around to this is to manually change speed down by pressing spin speed selector button down from 1600 to zero then machine spin cycle will finally finish, the 1 min remaining display will then change too show the end display.

also there is a 29 min rapid wash cycle with a 800 spin which works fine but timer now says 30 mins instead off 29 so main issue is spin cycle

Ive read lots of forums saying ways to reset programming by unplugging machine at the wall for 2 mins setting cylce and switch on but this hasn't worked for me

Hope someone can tell me a fix soon

Thx

Karl

Hi Karl,

What you describe is more likely a **motor feedback/control issue** than something that needs a simple reset. The machine is probably not “seeing” the motor speed correctly on spin, so it keeps trying to reach or control spin speed and gets stuck at 1 minute.

Before inspecting anything internal, **isolate the washing machine from the mains**.

1. **Recheck the new carbon brush** - Make sure it is the **correct type for this exact motor** and fitted the right way round. - Check both brushes move freely in their holders and have good spring pressure. - New brushes can spark a bit at first, but **heavy sparking on spin** suggests poor seating, the wrong brush, or a worn commutator.

2. **Inspect the motor commutator** - Look at the copper segments where the brushes run. - If it is badly burnt, rough, grooved, or uneven, the motor can misbehave especially at high speed.

3. **Check the motor tacho coil** - On many Hoover motors there is a **tacho coil/magnet** on the back of the motor. - If the tacho is loose, damaged, disconnected, or its magnet has cracked, the control board cannot regulate spin properly. - This is one of the most common causes of endless spin/1-minute sticking.

4. **Check motor wiring and plug connections** - Inspect the motor connector, loom, and pins for burning, looseness, or broken wires, especially around the tacho wires.

5. **Control module possibility** - If brushes, commutator, and tacho all check out, the **motor control section on the PCB** may be faulty.

The fact the lower-speed rapid cycle behaves better does point strongly toward a **high-speed motor feedback problem**. If you are not confident testing the motor/tacho with a meter, it would be best to get a **qualified appliance engineer** in. Any mains electrical, gas, or sealed refrigeration work should always be left to a properly qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
