Ariston Margherita A1635
When I switch on my Ariston Margherita A1635 it fills with water then empties again and then the control switch keeps clicking round in a clockwise direction.
Any thoughts please.

Hi Brian,
That symptom usually means the machine is aborting the wash and the timer/programmer is advancing because it is not seeing the condition it expects. On this older Ariston, the most likely causes are drainage, water level sensing, heating, or the programmer itself.
1. Check the drain system first If it fills then immediately pumps out, make sure the drain hose isn’t pushed too far down the standpipe or sealed in airtight, as this can cause siphoning. The end of the hose should be at the correct height and not submerged. Also clean the pump filter and check for a partial blockage in the pump or drain hose.
2. Check whether it is actually pumping or just losing water If you can hear the pump running as it empties, that points more to a control/sensing fault. If the water just disappears without the pump, siphoning is very likely.
3. Check the pressure system A blocked pressure chamber or pressure switch hose can make the machine “think” it is overfilled or empty/full at the wrong time. Inspect the small tube from the drum to the pressure switch for soap sludge, splits, or blockage.
4. Consider the heater circuit On some older machines, a failed heating element can cause the programmer to stall or click round. If it fills, tumbles briefly, drains, and then advances oddly, the heater or thermostat circuit is worth checking.
5. Programmer/timer fault If the above checks are all fine, the mechanical/electrical programmer itself may be faulty, which was not uncommon on older models.
Please isolate it from the mains before removing any panels or inspecting internal parts. If testing live electrical parts, wiring, or replacing the programmer/heater, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
