It does sound repairable, and the fact that it will still run a spin cycle is a useful clue. Rapid clicking from the programmer/control area often means it is trying to start a part of the cycle but something isn’t completing, so the control keeps retrying.

Before doing any internal checks, isolate the washer from the mains.

1. Check the door interlock A faulty door lock is a very common cause. On wash, the machine must lock the door before filling and heating. If the lock is weak or not proving locked, the control can click repeatedly and go no further. If the door feels loose, or the lock light behaviour seems odd, this is one of the first suspects.

2. Check whether it is filling with water Start a wash and listen carefully. Does it click but never let water in? If so, check the water supply, inlet hose, filter in the hose connection, and the inlet valve. A failed inlet valve coil can stop the programme from starting properly.

3. Check the motor circuit Because spin works, the motor is not completely dead, but wash uses a different pattern of operation. If the carbon brushes were only recently changed, recheck they are the correct type, fitted properly, and bedded in well. Also inspect the motor plug and wiring for burning or looseness.

4. Check the pressure system If the pressure chamber or pressure switch hose is blocked, the machine can “think” it is already full and refuse to begin filling properly.

5. Inspect the control board/programmer If the clicking is definitely a relay on the board, look for burnt solder joints, heat marks, or damaged components. Older Bosch machines can suffer dry joints on relays or connectors.

If you can say whether it fills with water, locks the door, or turns the drum at all on wash, that would narrow it down a lot. For mains electrical work, or if the fault is on the control board and you’re not confident testing live circuits, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
