Something stops the power

My Zanussi essential 1400 looked like it was dead, but I checked the fuse and socket - both OK. I opened the top (with power off), and traced the power lead in to the PCB box. I disconnected the output plugs in turn, to see if that was the problem, and with the end one disconnected (four red wires), the lights came back on the display and the different times showed for the different programmes. The machine seemed to try to start, bit of a turn of the drum, then nothing. The four red wires seem to go the the front control panel. I have had the machine for about 10 years, and I feel it doesn't owe me anything, but I'm curious as to what is causing the problem.

It does sound as if something on the machine is dragging the low-voltage supply down, rather than a simple plug fuse or dead socket. On these Zanussi/Electrolux machines, unplugging one connector and seeing the display wake up usually means either a short on that circuit, or a failing main PCB power supply that only copes when the load is reduced.

Before doing anything else, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

A few sensible checks:

1. Inspect the control panel wiring and connector If the four red wires go to the fascia/user interface, check for corrosion, burning, loose pins, or damaged insulation where the loom flexes or rubs. A shorted control panel or wiring fault could pull the supply down.

2. Check the door interlock circuit If the display returns but the machine only gives a slight drum movement and then stops, the door lock is worth checking. A faulty interlock can stop the programme from properly starting, although it would not usually explain the machine appearing completely dead on its own.

3. Look closely at the main PCB Remove the board cover and inspect for burnt components, cracked solder joints, or signs of overheating. On a 10-year-old Zanussi, failed components on the power supply side of the PCB are quite common.

4. Consider whether the fascia board is faulty If disconnecting that plug reliably brings the display back, the user interface board itself may be shorting internally.

5. Don’t keep powering it up repeatedly Reconnecting and testing repeatedly can damage the PCB further if there is a short.

Most likely it is either the front control panel/user interface or the main PCB, but without meter checks it’s hard to be certain. If you want to pursue it, a qualified engineer should test the PCB outputs and wiring properly. Any mains electrical work should be left to a competent repairer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
