Please can you suggest why my Bosch Max xx having worked perfectly will now only start a program at 30 degrees?

If the machine will only begin a wash when 30°C is selected, the fault is often connected with how it is sensing or heating the water on the other temperature settings. It may still be something simple, so it’s worth narrowing it down first.

1. Check exactly what “won’t start” means Does it lock the door, take in water, and then stop? Or does nothing happen at all on 40/60/90 but it runs normally on 30? That difference matters. If it fills then stalls, the heating circuit is more suspect.

2. Try a rinse/spin and a cold wash If rinse/spin works and a true cold or 30°C cycle works, but hotter washes do not, this points towards a heater, thermostat/NTC sensor, or wiring issue rather than a general control fault.

3. Consider the heater circuit On Bosch machines, a faulty heating element can sometimes affect programme progress. If the element is leaking to earth or open circuit, the machine may refuse or abort hotter programmes. An insulation test is best for this.

4. Check the temperature sensor (NTC) If the NTC is out of range, the control may not recognise water temperature correctly and can behave oddly on selected temperatures.

5. Inspect connections With the appliance isolated from the mains, check for loose, burnt, or corroded connections on the heater and sensor area if you are competent to remove the rear panel.

6. Control/programme selector Less common, but possible if only one setting is accepted and others are ignored.

Always isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting internal parts. If testing the heater, NTC, wiring, or control board is beyond you, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
