The program is set at quick wash and wont start the start button is flashing but the machine won't start when you press it? I have since sourced the error code which is 18 if this helps?

Many thanks

Hi Alison,

If the programme is selected but the Start button just flashes and nothing happens, the machine is usually being prevented from starting by a basic safety or sensing issue rather than the wash programme itself. I wouldn’t rely on the “18” meaning anything specific unless it came from Beko documentation for your exact model.

Please isolate the washing machine from the mains before inspecting anything internal.

1. Check the door is definitely locking Close the door firmly and listen for the lock engaging when you press Start. A flashing Start light often points to the door not locking properly. Check for laundry trapped in the door opening and inspect the catch on the door for damage.

2. Try cancelling and resetting Turn the selector to Off, wait a minute, then select a different programme such as Cottons and try again. Sometimes a control board glitch can stop it starting.

3. Check for water supply issues Make sure the water tap is fully on and the inlet hose isn’t kinked. If the machine thinks it can’t fill, it may refuse to begin properly.

4. Check if there is water left inside If there is water in the drum from a previous cycle, the pump filter or drain system may be partially blocked. On many Beko machines this can stop a new programme from starting.

5. Child lock / option conflict Make sure child lock isn’t active and try with no extra options selected. Some settings can prevent a quick wash from being accepted depending on load or temperature selection.

6. If it still won’t start The most likely faults are the door interlock, drain pump issue, wiring fault, or main control board.

If basic checks don’t sort it, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer to test it properly, especially for any live electrical diagnosis.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
