Problems with Smart Feature on Hotpoint
Currently have a Hotpoint WMFUG 742. I noticed that immediately after an auto clean wash, that during a washing cycle (close to the end), the auto light came on (set by using Smart button for some washes) and the time to end went back 30 mins. However, the Smart feature was not applicable to the cycle I was using. Moreover it kept nearing end but continually the wash was extended. The only way I could get to end was to stop and put on spin and pump out. Tried running another auto clean and that was fine, but not tried a new ordinary cycle yet.
Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the machine is “recalculating” the programme near the end, rather than the Smart option actually being selected properly. On these Hotpoint washers, repeated time extensions are often caused by the control waiting for a condition to be met, most commonly draining, balancing for spin, heating, or a control panel glitch.
A few checks to narrow it down:
1. Run a normal wash with no Smart option selected Use a simple cottons or quick wash and watch what happens in the last 20–30 minutes. Note whether it is stuck before spin, during spin, or while draining.
2. Check if it is draining properly If water is left in the drum or it sounds as though the pump is struggling, check the pump filter and drain hose for a partial blockage. A slow drain can make the timer keep extending.
3. Consider load balance If this happened with a small or awkward load, the machine may have been repeatedly trying to balance before final spin. Try a medium mixed load and see if the fault repeats.
4. Check heating behaviour If the water is not heating properly, some programmes can overrun. If washes are coming out unusually cold, a heater or sensor issue is possible.
5. Try a reset Switch off, unplug for 10–15 minutes, then retry. This can clear an odd electronic glitch after the auto-clean cycle.
6. Watch the Smart/Auto light If that light comes on by itself again on unsuitable programmes, the button panel or main control could be misreading inputs.
Please isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If it keeps extending cycles after these checks, it would be sensible to get a qualified appliance engineer to test the pump, heater/NTC and control board properly.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
