Hi, have a leak. I think I have found it but can't get to it.

its on its side and I have removed the base and the left hand side panel. Behind the side panel removed there is a large oblong of plastics, the height of the dishwasher and about half as wide , about 2-3cm deep.

Its leaking at the bottom, behind the door Spring mechanism. Thisnisnwhat I can't remove to get to the leak.

any clues how to remove ? I can figure out the spring and string, and one end of the set up. But the bit by the door? Can't figure it out.

thanks

It sounds like you’re looking at the side water matrix / fill chamber, and the leak may only be showing near the door spring area because that’s where the water is running down rather than where it starts.

Before doing anything else, isolate the appliance from the mains and turn the water off. If you need to inspect live parts, or if the repair involves mains wiring, gas, or sealed refrigeration systems, use a qualified engineer.

1. Confirm the appliance type first You’ve posted under washing machines, but your description sounds much more like a dishwasher side chamber. If it is a dishwasher, that large flat plastic part is often not meant to be removed until hoses, clips and sometimes the front/side fixings are released.

2. Don’t start with the door spring The spring and cord are usually unrelated to the leak itself. They are often just in the way. In many machines, the spring hooks into the base and the hinge pulley arrangement by the door, and the awkward part is normal.

3. Find the true source of the leak Dry the area thoroughly, then run a short fill cycle and watch with a torch. Check for: - cracks in the plastic chamber - leaks from hose joints at the bottom - perished rubber seals - overflow from a blocked chamber

4. Removing the side chamber Typically you need to: - remove top and side panel(s) - disconnect inlet/vent hoses - release retaining clips or screws - slide/lift the chamber off its locating tabs If the leak is from the chamber itself, replacement is usually better than trying to seal it.

5. Check the simple causes A blocked matrix/chamber can overflow and mimic a split. Also inspect the sump hose and any hose clips directly below it.

If you can add the make and model number, and confirm whether it’s a dishwasher or washing machine, I can advise the likely fixing points more accurately.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
