Stopped mid cycle

Your help please .... I have an AEG washer/dryer integrated machine LAVAMAT TURBO. I started my usual wash cycle and later I went to check and noticed that with 11mins remaining the machine just stopped .... I waited for a bit just to check and nothing .... I therefore thought I'd drain the water and it started to make the usual noise for draining and then nothing and the timer went down and this continued so I reset and thought I'd spin and again the machine made the right noises the timer went down but nothing ... in either cases I also noticed that the drum did not move. There is no error code. I cleaned out the filter. I removed the clothes and thought I'd try and run a normal programme wash and I could see water fill a little and then nothing the timer would go down and that would be it. I turned it round to drain it but it would accept this so I had to reset and switch it on and off and then set it to drain and the water disappeared and then nothing, no drum movement and the timer goes down. I tried to spin it wouldn't accept just going to spin so I had to reset and switch the on and off button and then try the drain. Again made the right noises but then nothing and the timer would go down .....

I would be grateful for some advise as to what this could be to help me.

Many thanks

It sounds like the programme is advancing, but the machine isn’t actually carrying out the wash/spin actions. On an AEG washer-dryer, the main suspects would be a drainage issue still lingering, a motor/drum drive fault, or worn motor carbon brushes if it has a brushed motor.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the appliance from the mains.

1. Check if the drum turns freely by hand With the machine off, try turning the drum by hand. It should move smoothly with a little resistance. If it is stiff, jammed, or rough, that points to a mechanical problem.

2. Check the drive belt If you can safely remove the rear/side access panel, see whether the belt has come off or snapped. If the motor runs but the drum does not move, a belt fault is possible.

3. Listen to the motor during a spin command If you hear a brief hum or attempt to start but no drum movement, worn carbon brushes are quite common on older AEG machines. If the brushes are badly worn, the timer can still count down with little happening.

4. Re-check draining properly Even though the filter is clean, check the drain hose, pump impeller, and the sump hose from tub to pump for a blockage. A partial blockage can confuse the programme and stop spin.

5. Check for heating delay on washer-dryer cycles Stopping near the end can sometimes be due to a heating or thermostat/NTC issue, but your “no drum movement at all” makes motor-related faults more likely.

If the belt is intact and the drum turns freely, motor brushes or the motor/control circuit would be high on the list. For live electrical testing, motor work, or control board diagnosis, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
