Hotpoint Aqualtis non responsive

Yesterday our Hotpoint Aqualtis washing machine (model #AQ113D697E) stopped before the end of the cycle.

For some time now it has occasionally remained on 1 minute remaining. We found changing the dial to spin and starting the spin cycle would always resolve this particular issue.

Yesterday it powered down. None of the buttons where responsive. There was washing in the machine, It must have been near the end of the cycle because there was water in the bottom and the clothes where wet. The door unlocked.

I removed the drain plug from the front of the machine, and drained a few litres of water. There is nothing blocking the impeller.

I unplugged the machine and plugged it back in. It appeared to turn on; the light above the power button is green. there is an amber light above the child lock. the dial turns and the lights respond. the start button is pulsating.

However none of the buttons respond. The machine cannot be turned off without unplugging it, although if left it will shut off eventually.

Has anyone seen these symptoms before?

It does sound like two faults may be overlapping here: the earlier “stuck on 1 minute” points to a draining/heating/control issue, but the current “powers up yet buttons don’t respond” often suggests the controls are locked, the fascia isn’t communicating properly, or the main control has faulted.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the machine from the mains.

1. Check for child lock first The amber child lock light is important. On many Hotpoint/Indesit models, if child lock is active the buttons appear dead. Try pressing and holding the child lock button or the two buttons marked for lock/unlock for around 3–5 seconds. If unsure, try holding Start/Pause as well for a few seconds.

2. Try a full reset Unplug it for at least 10–15 minutes, then reconnect. Turn the programme dial to Off if possible, then select Drain or Spin and try Start/Pause. If it still won’t accept commands, that points away from a simple software glitch.

3. Re-check draining Since it had a history of hanging at 1 minute, make sure the drain hose isn’t kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe. A weak pump can also cause end-of-cycle problems even if the impeller looks clear.

4. Consider the control panel / main PCB If lights come on, the dial responds, but no buttons work and it won’t switch off normally, a faulty user interface board, button panel, wiring connection, or main PCB is quite possible.

5. Check internal connections only if competent With power isolated, inspect the wiring plugs between fascia and main board for loose/corroded connections. If all looks sound, board failure becomes more likely.

Given the symptoms, I’d be cautious about guessing one exact part. If child lock reset doesn’t restore operation, it would be sensible to have a qualified appliance engineer test the control circuit. Any mains electrical work should be left to a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
