Hi,

From your description, the machine is powering up and immediately trying to start, then dropping into a fault with a particular light pattern. On these Hotpoint/Indesit-built washer dryers, that often points to either a stuck control/button input, a door lock issue, or a control board fault, but the flash pattern needs interpreting carefully.

Try these checks first:

1. Reset the appliance Turn it off at the mains for 10–15 minutes, then power it back up and see if it behaves the same. A simple reset can sometimes clear a control glitch.

2. Check if any button is stuck in Make sure none of the side buttons are jammed or permanently pressed. If a button feels different or doesn’t click properly, the control may think a programme has been selected automatically.

3. Check the programme knob Turn the selector through all positions and back to off. A faulty selector can sometimes cause self-starting or incorrect fault indication.

4. Inspect the door and door lock Make sure the door closes firmly. If the door interlock is failing, the machine may start its sequence then immediately fault. Listen for the usual lock “click” when switched on.

5. Note exactly which lights flash On this range, the fault code is usually identified by the exact combination of flashing LEDs. If you can list the lights from top to bottom as on/off/flashing, plus whether the door lock light is lit, that would help narrow it down.

6. Internal fault likely If it always starts by itself, the main control board or fascia/user interface may be at fault.

Important: isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. For mains electrical testing or board replacement, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

If you can post the exact light pattern top-to-bottom, I can help narrow it down further.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
