Please help ! .

So I have a Hotpoint fml462 9kg washing machine 18 months old , As of last week it has stopped going into the final spin . IT fills with water , washes , drains ,rinses , drains and then goes back to wash instead of going in to the final spin setting before ending , however if I put the dial to the spin setting it will do it .

Have checked the filter which is clear and the drain hose which again is clear ... have run on empty and drains quickly .. I'm stuck and as a family of 6 am lost without my machine so need to get fixed asap , as dont want to use incase causes and further damage .

Any ideas on what the cause could be ?

Hi. If it will do a spin when you manually select Spin, but skips the final spin at the end of a wash, the most likely issue is not the motor itself. It’s usually something stopping the control from “deciding” conditions are right for final spin.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the machine from the mains.

1. Check for an out-of-balance load issue Try a normal wash with just a few towels or a mixed medium load. If the load is too heavy, too light, or bunched up, the machine may keep redistributing and then end the programme without the final fast spin.

2. Make sure it is fully draining at the end of rinse Even if it seems to drain quickly, the final spin can be cancelled if the pressure system still “thinks” there is water inside. Check the drain hose isn’t pushed too far down the standpipe and that there are no partial restrictions.

3. Suspect the pressure system A common cause is a pressure switch or pressure chamber/air tube issue. If the pressure tube is partially blocked with residue, the machine may wash and drain but fail to recognise it is empty enough for final spin.

4. Check programme options Make sure no reduced-crease, easy-iron, rinse hold, or no-spin option has been selected accidentally.

5. If all the above checks out Then it could be a control board or sensor-related fault. Because it’s only 18 months old, also check whether it is still covered by any retailer or Hotpoint warranty.

I would avoid stripping into electrical parts unless confident. For mains-related diagnosis or internal component testing, best to get a qualified appliance engineer. WhitegoodsHelp AI

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
