Hi my Indesit washing machine won’t work on the separate extra spin cycle. The minutes show but the machine just slowly moves but doesn’t go into full spin mode. I’ve cleaned the filter

If the separate spin programme won’t ramp up, but the drum only tumbles slowly, the machine is usually refusing to spin because it thinks there is still water inside, the load is unbalanced, or there’s a fault with the motor control/tacho system.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check whether it is actually draining fully Run a drain or spin programme and listen for the pump. If water is left in the drum, or it drains very slowly, it often won’t go into high spin even if the filter is clean. Check the drain hose for kinks, blockage, or that it isn’t pushed too far down the standpipe.

2. Try an empty spin Remove the washing and try the spin cycle with an empty drum. If it spins empty but not with clothes in, it points more to load balance, worn shock absorbers, or a weak motor struggling to distribute the load.

3. Watch for repeated slow turns If it keeps turning slowly left and right, it may be stuck in the “balance” stage. One heavy item such as a towel or dressing gown can cause this. Try a mixed load of a few items instead of one bulky item.

4. Check the pump filter housing and impeller Even with the filter cleaned, debris can jam the pump impeller intermittently. Make sure it turns freely and there’s no restriction in the sump hose.

5. If it still never reaches full spin Possible causes include the pressure system, motor brushes (if fitted), tacho coil, control board, or worn suspension parts. These need proper diagnosis.

If you’re not confident, or if it involves mains testing, it’s best to get a qualified appliance engineer. WhitegoodsHelp AI

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
