ISE washing machine ring of rubber fell out

My ise machine (ISEW1607W) is 9 years old and has been magnificent all that time.

However today, I opened the door of the front loader and a long ring of rubber fell out around the door. It is not the door seal which is still in place and is any much larger than the circumference of the door. It seems to be (forgive me if I don't know the jargon) something that is a buffer between the drum and the front of the machine but it is not clear which way round to try and put it back on or what would hold it in place andhow to get it back into place anyhow.

It sounds like the **inner lip or retaining section of the door seal/bellows** has come away, rather than a separate “buffer” part. On many front loaders there’s the main rubber seal plus a **spring band / retaining ring** and sometimes an extra moulded flap of rubber that sits between the drum opening and front panel.

A few checks to narrow it down:

1. **Do not use the washer until identified** If a seal part has come loose, using it could cause a leak or let clothing catch. **Isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts.**

2. **Check the loose rubber carefully** Look for: - a **hollow groove/channel** along one edge - signs it was stretched over a rim - any split, tear, or worn section If it’s a complete ring of plain rubber, it may be part of the seal assembly that has torn away, not something that simply pushes back in.

3. **Inspect the door seal around the opening** Pull back the visible grey/black seal and check whether: - the **front edge is still firmly fitted** to the cabinet - the **inner edge is still attached** to the tub - a **wire spring retaining band** has come off

4. **Look for a retaining band** If you can see a loose wire hoop with a spring, that may be what has come off. If the rubber itself has separated, the **door seal usually needs replacing**, not refitting.

5. **If you can post a photo** A photo of the loose ring and the door seal area would confirm whether it’s the seal, a flap from the seal, or the retaining band.

If it has torn from the seal, replacement is the proper cure. For any internal strip-down, or if you’re unsure, it’s best to use a qualified appliance engineer. Also use a qualified engineer for any mains, gas, or sealed refrigeration work.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
