Hi, I have a Beko wmi71641

A few days ago I tried to out on a wash but it wouldn’t start.

pressing the play/pause button does nothing.

i turned off the appliance and put the dial to the 12 o’clock position with the play/pause button pressed. I received the error code 17.

the advice online is to do a few rinse cycles but I can’t reset the machine to start a new programme.

the machine is still stuck on the flashing play icon.

i have checked the filter and cleared a few coins and water. All clear now.

would anyone know what the next steps would be for this problem

thanks in advance

Hi, if the machine is stuck with the start/pause light flashing and won’t accept a new programme, the most useful approach is to work through the basics first rather than rely too much on an online “error 17” meaning, as these can vary by model and software version.

Before checking anything internal, isolate the appliance from the mains.

1. Try a proper reset Turn the selector to Off, unplug the machine for 10-15 minutes, then plug back in. Select a simple drain or spin programme and press Start. If it still ignores the button, note whether the door locks or clicks at all.

2. Check if there is still water trapped Even if the filter is now clear, a partial blockage in the pump or drain hose can leave the control waiting to empty. Check the drain hose for kinks, blockage at the sink spigot, and whether the pump impeller behind the filter turns freely.

3. Check the door lock behaviour If the machine does not think the door is safely locked, it often won’t start and may just flash Start/Pause. Close the door firmly and listen for the lock engaging a few seconds after pressing Start. If there is no click, the door interlock or wiring is a strong suspect.

4. Check the Start/Pause button itself If the button feels loose, jammed, or has no positive action, the switch on the fascia may have failed. That would also explain why you cannot begin or reset a programme.

5. If it still won’t respond The likely faults become the door interlock, control panel/button fault, pump/drain issue, or main control board fault.

If you’re not confident testing live electrical parts, it’s best to get a qualified appliance engineer in. Any mains-related checks should be left to a professional.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
