Hi All,

We have a 2011 LG washing machine, it makes little to no noise while washing, but when it spins it is vibrating a lot and making a quite horrendous noise,

Not much else to say, just wondered if you had any ideas what the noise points to and what i need to do to fix it.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

If it’s fairly quiet during wash/tumble but becomes very noisy and shakes badly on spin, the usual suspects are the drum bearings, something trapped, or a suspension issue. On an older 2011 LG, bearings are high on the list.

1. Check the simple things first Make sure the machine is level and all four feet are firmly on the floor. An uneven machine can vibrate badly on spin. Also try a spin with no laundry in it, to rule out an out-of-balance load.

2. Turn the drum by hand Isolate the appliance from the mains first. Open the door and rotate the drum slowly by hand. If it feels rough, rumbly, or you can hear a grinding sound, that strongly points to worn drum bearings.

3. Check for drum play Lift the stainless inner drum up and down from the door opening. There should be very little movement. If there is noticeable lift or clunking, bearings or the drum spider may be worn.

4. Look for signs of bearing failure Check for rusty marks, brown streaks, or water staining around the rear of the drum or inside the cabinet. That often happens when the bearing seal has failed.

5. Consider other possibilities If the noise is more of a banging than a rumble, inspect the shock absorbers, springs, and concrete weights. Also check for an object trapped between the drums.

If you can upload the video again or describe whether the noise is a rumble, scrape, or bang, that would narrow it down. If it is bearings, repair can be quite involved on some LG models. For any internal mains work, or if the tub has to be dismantled, I’d recommend a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
