Hover DYN 9154 DBX When I select a programme the time and temp jumps randomly, I can press time to change say 30 to 45 if I then try and change temp the time will randomly jump to different settings as does the temp, we’ve lived with this problem for a number of years but it’s now getting worse

im quite competent at diy etc any help appreciated, I’m guessing it could be the programming board or even a loose wire

thanks

It does sound more like a control/input fault than a simple loose wire, especially as it has gradually worsened over years. On these Hoover/Candy-built machines, the usual suspects are the selector/buttons panel, the wiring between the fascia and main board, or less commonly the main PCB itself.

Before inspecting anything internal, isolate the washing machine from the mains.

1. Check the control knob and button panel If the programme knob feels loose, cracked, or is not positively locating, the selector encoder behind it may be worn. Likewise, if the option buttons feel sticky or intermittent, the fascia/user interface board can send false inputs.

2. Inspect for moisture or detergent contamination Remove the top and control fascia if accessible and look for signs of condensation, detergent residue, corrosion, or green/white deposits on the control board and button panel connections. A slightly contaminated panel can cause random setting changes.

3. Reseat all plugs and wiring Unplug and reconnect the wiring plugs between the display/button panel and the main PCB. Look for loose pins, overheated connectors, or broken wires where the loom flexes.

4. Check the user interface board first Given the symptoms, the front control/display board is often more likely than the main power board. Random jumping values commonly come from a faulty rotary encoder or tactile switch matrix.

5. Main PCB only after ruling out the above If wiring and fascia are sound, then the main board becomes more likely, but board diagnosis can be uncertain without testing.

If you’re competent, a careful visual inspection is worthwhile. If you find no obvious damage, a replacement fascia/interface board is the most sensible next suspect. For live electrical testing or board replacement if unsure, use a qualified appliance engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
