Hotpoint WD21 "Starter Edition" question
Hi,
My (ancient) washer/dryer won't properly go into spin mode - it just does the general "tumble" action when it is supposed to be spinning. Clothes thus come out sopping wet. First thing seems to be to check the filter. Where is it? It doesn't seem to be under the panel near the floor, which seems to be not removable.
Anybody have any ideas?

This thread was marked as solved. Here's a summary of the problem and the fix, generated from the discussion below.
Hotpoint WD21 washer/dryer will not enter spin and only tumbles
- The problem
- An older Hotpoint WD21 washer/dryer completed wash functions and pumped water out, but when it should have spun it only continued the normal tumbling action. Clothes were left very wet. The same happened on the spin-only programme and also with the drum empty.
- Likely cause
- The strongest diagnosis in the discussion was a fault in the pressure system, possibly a blockage causing the machine to think water was still inside. A pump or pump-filter blockage was considered less likely because the machine was confirmed to be pumping water out.
- What fixed it
- Recommended action was to investigate the pressure system for blockage or related fault. No exact repair steps or replaced parts were confirmed in the discussion.
- Checks to try
- Confirmed that water drained out when pumped over a sink
- Ran the spin-only programme several times
- Observed that the machine still only tumbled instead of spinning
- Tested with no laundry in the drum and the fault remained
Safety: Further diagnosis should be carried out by a suitably qualified appliance engineer.

Hi. It can only be related to the pump or pump filter being blocked if it’s not pumping the water out. If it’s pumping away the water then it’s likely to be something else.
A fault in the pressure system is one possibility. There’s a lot about faults in pressure system over on Whitegoodshelp. Does it spin with no laundry in?

First thing I'd check is that the standpipe, or whatever it is plumbed into is draining freely.
The older models would have been accessible from underneath, if not the rear. The only one I remember having off was my parents 1980 Hotpoint Microtronic, to remove the remains of a missing bunch of keys and small change, and that just had a rubber U bend trap attached to the pump.
Thanks. Water does drain out, that's for sure - I let it pump out over the sink. There is a program setting that does spin only. The pump fires up as part of that, so I have put this cycle on a few times by itself. That way, if the thing is pumping out too slowly due to partial blockage, the several cycles would get all the water out to allow a spin. But it still does a tumble action when it's supposed to spin. In all other respects a full washing cycle does everything correctly, including the mid water change.
The strange way it tumbles when it is supposed to spin seems as if it might be getting the wrong signal from the cylinder timer control (it is one of the old clackety-clack rotating cylinder ones) possibly due to a short there? Or maybe the out-of-balance sensors are stuck on overload?
It is 1995 vintage (ahem), although used only once a week-ish, so I am not going to spend much money on it.
Still does tumble when supposed to spin, even when empty.
That can be caused by a blocked pressure system causing washing machine to believe there is still water inside when there isn't. Other things can cause it too though. Faults on pressure system
