Hi,

A very loud whirling noise only on spin usually points to something in the spin/drum support, drive system, or pump area rather than a general motor fault. Without hearing the video in person I can’t be certain, but these checks should help narrow it down.

1. Check the load and levelling Make sure the washer is level and not overloaded or running with a single heavy item. An out-of-balance load can make a dramatic roaring/whirling sound on spin.

2. Spin the drum by hand Isolate the appliance from the mains first. With the machine empty, turn the drum by hand. If it feels rough, rumbly, or noisy, suspect drum bearings or the drum support/spider.

3. Look for rubbing marks Check inside the drum and around the tub for signs of the drum rubbing the outer tub or cabinet. If the inner drum has excessive up/down play, that also suggests bearing or support failure.

4. Check underneath for belt/pulley issues If accessible, inspect the belt and pulley. A loose belt, worn pulley, or damaged drive components can make a loud whirring or roaring on spin.

5. Check the pump area Although pump noise is usually heard during drain, some top loaders get noisier on spin if the drain pump is struggling. Check for debris if there’s a filter/access point.

6. Consider suspension issues Worn suspension rods/dampers can allow the tub to move excessively and get very noisy only at high speed.

If the noise is a deep roar that rises with spin speed, bearings are high on the list. If you’re not confident inspecting internal parts, it’s best to get a qualified engineer in. Any mains-related work should only be done with the appliance isolated from the electricity supply.

Safety first — read before actioning advice

  • Never work on a live appliance

Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.

  • Never attempt gas work

By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.

  • Watch for sharp edges

Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.

  • Water appliances can leak

Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.

  • Know your limits

If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
