Black Marks On Clothes
I have had black marks on clothes when I have washed them. I read on some sites that I should carry out a maintenance wash to get rid of any grime or build up which I did. I did this with a normal powder detergent and at 90. However there are now small black particles of grime or gunge floating in the machine when it is in the rinse cycle. I have put it on rinse 3 times now with no clothes in and the particles of dirt or gunge are still there. Could this be the cleaning I have done has released this dirt into the drum? I am reluctant to put a wash on with clothes as these particles or gunge will mark the clothes.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would imagine that's exactly what has happened. The boil wash has probably released gunge and grease that was coated on the insides of the washing machine. I would try putting the washing machine on a few more washes without laundry, but put some detergent in which might help as dirt and grime clings to the detergent. Normal 40° washes should be okay.
If you can remove some of this gunge yourself then do so. Otherwise it it's a question of just letting it all get washed out and doing regular maintenance washes from now on.

Had the same probem with black marks on my laundry. Read on the interent it is the bearings!Machine made no rumbling noises, but I had the marks!
Contacted my landlord, who send a technitian, who confirmed -> bearings = cheaper to replace than to repair.
Landlord bought me a new washingmachine.
To my horror there was more black marks on my white laundry with the brand new machine though! Was it the dryer?
I called the dryer service and the nice lady told me to check if the drain hose from my washing machine might be inserted too far into the drain pipe. Should only be 2-3 inches. If inserted to far into the drain tube, teh hose can supposedly suck waste water back into the machine! I pulled out the hose and it was all mucky and about 6 inches into the tube. Now that I have adjusted the hose and run an empty wash cycle to clear the hose etc, the next white wash came out ex any stains - RESULT!?!?!
Just feel sorry that a probably still alright and not so old washing machine has gone to the skip. Wonder if most the black marks = bearing problem posts are facilitated by engineers who just want to sell new machines?!!?
One week on - I actually have found out that as there has been some stains again, which are not there when taking stuff out of the washer, they must originate from inside the dryer!
Hope it's service will finally get me marks free!
Last week i did a home laundry and i found some black marks just like you guys described and i said to myself, tha machine must be rusty, but i didn't check, since the marks appàeared mainly on white clothing , any help?
Many thanks for the tip on black marks on washing, then small black specks. Just the problem I have had after using a cleanser especially for the washer. I will try the tip sent in of putting a few washes on without the clothes. Bettie Lilley
Thanks Jamie. Maybe after doing one of those washes you could try washing some old sheets and towels so that if anything is still floating about it may stick to them where it doesn't matter.
