Smell From Washing Machine
Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
I am just finishing refitting my daughters kitchen, which included adding a trap for the washing machine outlet. I did this because previously the outlet went out through the wall to an open drain (it's and older type house) and she was getting a drain smell when the machine was used. I assumed it was coming back up the waste pipe, hence the new trap. After the first wash I noticed the smell was still there, so now I am thinking it is the machine itself, or maybe the end of the outlet hose that goes into the stand pipe. I would be grateful for advice please, also, where do I get one of those hook things that helps the hose to hang in the stand pipe.

Hello Malcolm and welcome. You are right, a washing machine pumping out into an open drain is bad, and can allow drain smells up through into the Kitchen. It shouldn't normally get into the washing machine so much because it has its own water trap in that the sump hose is always full of water. This isn't by design, it's just that the pump can never pump all the water out and tends to leave a pint or so in the sump hose.
It may be that the washing machine needs several maintenance washes to clean it. Read this topic for further advice

try putting on a cycle minus the clothes, lots of detergent, thats my first port of call when the odours come calling!

Hi your quite right it could the sump needs flushing BUT iv seen old drains get blocked with leaves ,that create a bad gas that gos still through the traps and up through the sink .Try the drains first they may have a small blockage.
