Elica cooker hood not extracting steam or smells
Hoping someone can help with my Elica cooker hood — it barely pulls any steam or cooking smells away. Really hoping it's a cheap fix.

If the hood runs but hardly removes steam or smells, the fault is often airflow-related rather than the motor itself. The good news is that the cheaper causes are the most common.
1. Check whether it is set up to extract or recirculate If it was fitted to recirculate, it will only filter and blow air back into the room, which is always less effective on steam. If you expect it to vent outside, make sure there is actually ducting connected and that it hasn’t come loose or become blocked.
2. Clean or replace the filters Grease filters blocked with grease will dramatically reduce airflow. Remove and wash the metal grease filters if fitted. If it uses charcoal filters for recirculation, these usually need replacing periodically and cannot normally be washed.
3. Inspect the ducting If it is externally vented, check for crushed flexible duct, long duct runs, too many bends, or a blocked outside grille. Any of these can severely reduce performance. A non-return flap stuck shut can also cause poor extraction.
4. Test airflow properly Run it on maximum speed with the filters removed briefly. If airflow improves a lot, the issue is filter restriction. If it is still weak, suspect ducting, flap problems, or a tired motor/fan.
5. Check the fan impeller Isolate the appliance from the mains before inspecting any internal parts. If accessible, check whether the fan blades are clogged with grease or loose on the motor shaft.
If basic cleaning and duct checks don’t improve it, the motor or fan assembly may need attention. For any mains work, use a qualified engineer.

Safety first — read before actioning advice
Never work on a live appliance
Always unplug it at the mains before going near it with any tools.
Never attempt gas work
By law, gas appliances must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If your fault involves gas, stop and call a professional — do not attempt it yourself.
Watch for sharp edges
Outer panels are smooth, but internal parts are full of sharp machined edges. Wear protective gloves and arm sleeves.
Water appliances can leak
Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hoses.
Know your limits
If you're not confident testing or working inside the appliance, STOP and call a professional.
